01 / Designing for the animals
The den replaced an existing dog house inside a sanctuary enclosure at Zoo to You (Conservation Ambassadors). Consultation with zookeepers and observation of lemur behavior shaped the brief: separate interior zones for seasonal territorial behavior, a sheltered sleeping area, a load-bearing sunbathing roof, and easy access for cleaning.
02 / Design & fabrication
I modeled the enclosure in Fusion 360 and optimized the flat pack layout for a single sheet of exterior-grade plywood. CNC-routed tab-and-slot joints provided repeatable assembly, with mechanical fasteners securing the structure. The design includes a rigid ladder with cylindrical rungs, an accessible entry platform, and a detachable, latched maintenance panel.
03 / Assembly & installation
The exposed surfaces were sealed with low-VOC water-based primer, paint, and polyurethane, then allowed to cure before installation. T-beam support frames made from 2×4 lumber elevated the den and distributed its load. The structure was bolted to the framing to prevent tipping or displacement, with the entrance, roof, and access panel oriented for the enclosure.
