01 / Compact storage, staged deployment
This model explores how to maximize deployed panel area within a constrained stowed volume. Ten panels are arranged in two vertical stacks of five. Compliant tape-and-spring hinges allow the panels to unfold sequentially after release.
02 / How the mechanism works
Each stack is held by a laser-cut clamp. A rack-and-pinion mechanism engages the ground during the model’s landing motion, converting translation into rotation to bring the stacks horizontal. A passive spring-driven pulley system then removes the clamps, allowing the panels to unfold.
03 / Iterative prototyping
Repeated rounds of laser-cut fabrication and assembly were used to refine hinge behavior, clamp retention forces, and deployment sequencing. The model brought the individual mechanisms together into a coordinated mechanical system, making the interfaces between storage, reorientation, and release central to the prototyping process.
